Idag avgjordes Australian Open of Surfing in Manly. Surfsverige var på plats i strandkanten i finalheaten som såg Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) slå Sofia Mulanovic (Peru) i damernas och juniormästaren Matt Banting (AUS) vinna herrklassen över Evan Gieselman (USA).
Sally / “It’s unbelievable! I was just focusing on working through my boards and going through some heats and before I know it I’m in the final. Sofia (Mulanovich) is such a tough competitor, I knew she’d be able to get the score needed, so it was a nervous wait at the end there. To win in front of this crowd, with so much support feels amazing! Then to have won the US Open and then the first ever Australian Open back to back is a special achievement.”
Matt / “This has been the best week of my life! I’m so happy, this is the best feeling I’ve ever had! I’m shaking so much I can hardly talk. Evan (Gieselman) is a really good surfer, he was blowing up for the whole final, I was really scared. I was just lucky to start off well with a couple of good waves. Garrett McNamara has ‘reportedly’ made history by breaking the current record of the biggest wave ever surfed. The wave, ridden during the two-month period of the ZON North Canyon Show 2011, said to be around 90 feet high. Towing in off Nazaré (about one hour’s drive north of Peniche where the recent ASP world tour event was held), which is home to one of the only deep-water canyons that runs all the way to shore, Garrett’s wave was witnessed by tow buddies Andrew Cotton from the UK, and Al Mennie from Ireland.
Everything seemed to be perfect”, said Al, “the weather, the waves. Both Cotty and I rode two big ones in the 60ft + range and then when Garrett got on the rope a wave, maybe 30 feet bigger came out of the canyon, it was meant to be. I had the best seat in the house as I was doing water safety on the ski as he dropped down the face of the biggest wave I've ever seen. It was incredible. Most people would look scared but Garrett looked in control as he went down the most critical part of the wave. It was an inspirational ride by an inspirational surfer. After the ride it was as if the sea calmed down. We sat out there and just absorbed both what had just happened and the surroundings. What a day!” tracksmag.com

Killer Sharks invade golf course in Oz

Members of a golf club in Australia have something more to worry about than just their swing - playing on what's thought to be the world's first shark-infested course.
Water hazards are a challenge for anyone who plays golf, but on the 14th tee at the Carbrook Golf Club in Brisbane there is another reason to be concerned. Half a dozen man-eating bullsharks live in the lake in the centre of the course where their fins poking through the water have become a regular sight. The sharks got onto the Queensland golf course when it flooded some years ago after a river broke its banks. More at news.sky.com

Polish Surfing Association together with Rip Curl, is stoked to announce the 5th edition of Polish Surfing Championships (The Polish Surfing Challenge). Based off last year’s success, the organizers promise even more interesting spectacle with Polish and European competitors, testing of sports equipment, attractive contests for the audience, and the highest level of surfing in our country. The official waiting period for The Polish Surfing Challenge 2011 will open on August 10 and will last until August 31, 2011. The exact date of the event will be announced 3 days prior to the start of competition depending on the favorable swell forecast. The contest will be held at Chałupy IV, Hel Peninsula, Poland.

The 2011 Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta De Lobos Big Wave Invitational has officially been called “ON” by Big Wave World Tour Contest Director Gary Linden for Saturday, May 28.
“We are excited to kick off the 2011 Big Wave World Tour with the third annual Quiksilver Ceremonial,” said Big Wave World Tour Contest Director, Gary Linden. “It looks like patience is going to pay off as we are expecting surf in the 30 to 40 foot range with light winds and good lighting making for the perfect start to season.”
The Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta De Lobos Big Wave Invitational will commence this weekend with the world’s top big wave riders competing for a $20,000 prize purse. As the first stop on the 2011 Big Wave World Tour, the Quiksilver Ceremonial is one of the world’s most anticipated big wave events, featuring some of the best waves and skilled surfers from around the globe.

International Surfing Day 2011

Söndagen den 19:e juni arrangeras International Surfing Day på stränder runt om i hela världen för 8:e året. Hittills är mer än 100 lokala arrangörer i mer än 20 länder med och arrangerar. Huvudorganisatör för ISD är EuroSIMA i samarbete med European Surfing Federation, Surfers Against Sewage och Surfrider Foundation Europe.
Vem som helst kan arrangera ISD på sin hemmplan och i Sverige är det än så länge bara Salusand Soulsurfers som arrangerar ISD i Salusand. Swedish Surfing Association vill gärna uppmana fler surfare och lokala föreningar att arrangera och uppmärksamma ISD. Som arrangör får du ett jättefint startpaket med massor av fina give-away-prylar och posters m.m. Arrangören väljer själv vilket fokus ISD ska ha på sin hemmaplan, så länge det handlar om surfing och miljö.

Triple Crown Kicks off in Hawaii

The holding period for the first jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing begins this Friday November 12, 2010 at Haleiwa. The Triple Crown of Surfing is a competition series comprised of three different venues: Haleiwa, Sunset Beach, and Banzai Pipeline. The surfer with the most points after competing in all three venues will win the Triple Crown Title. The best women and men surfers from around the world will be in Hawaii for the next month competing for $900,000 in prize money and world titles. Kelly Slater vinner sin 10:e världsmästartitel

I helgen skrevs surfhistoria när Kelly Slater blev världsmästare för tionde gången och vann Rip Curl Pro Search i Puerto Rico. Vinsten var ett faktum när han vann kvartsfinalen mot Adriano de Souza med tillräckligt många poäng för att slå ut Jordy Smith ur titelracet. Kelly gick sen vidare till final mot Bede Durbidge som han vann storslaget genom att sätta en perfekt 10-poängare och avsluta heatet med 18.77 av 20 möjliga poäng. Med sina tidigare ASP VM-titlar 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006 och 2008 har Kelly cementerat sin plats som tidernas bästa surfare. Läs mer på aspworldtour.com
Andy Irons död

Det är med djup sorg i hjärtat vi meddelar att den trefaldige värdsmästaren Andy Irons har avlidit, endast 32 år gammal, på väg från Puerto Rico tillbaka till sitt hem på Hawaii, efter att ha avbrutit sitt deltagande i tävlingen på grund av sjukdom. Vi delar chocken med en hel surfvärld och våra tankar går ut till Andys familj och vänner.
