hej!
Forstätter på engelska..
Hi anyone know of mellow surf spots close to Culver city, not to crowded or hardcore..
I found out today I might fly there Wednesday and stay over the weekend that means no work..who oho.
My level of surfing I guess is mediocre swede, i usually ride retro fish and 6'4 short board.
But any type of surfing would be nice, I'll take quantity over quality and crowd.
And if there are better rental places for surf gear than other please let me know.

cheers,
daniel

Well you have South Bay to the south - lots of shops but mostly beach breaks with the few point breaks infested with asshole locals: Landa Bay etc... Best and closest bet is Sunset Beach right at the actual end of Sunset Blvd. You proly need to pickup a board in Santa Monica - call around and ask. Once I was in Malibu for 4 hours - there's a rental shop within 2 minutes of the break- grabbed a big log BIC - ran to the beach- surfed second point for about two hours - back to the shop - changed back to street cloths at the counter and was back on the job before 2 o'clock with a surf under my belt and no-one the wiser (except the guy in the shop...) Might still be a shop near Topanga too nowthat I think of it...

I have two spots for you that is close, have surf shops with rentals close, it's not so crowded and suited for beginner/mid level surf, depending on swell of course. These are the spots I usually go, cause Malibu is always crowded, Venice =locals, Huntington =too far away.

I will post two mapquests for you, where black circle is parking and red is rental.

The first one is Bay street in Santa Monica. If you go from Culver City, just take the freeway 10 W and exit 4th, go south on 4th to Pico, make a right a Pico. Go straight down to Ocean. Park on Bay Street. You need quarters. To rent a board, go to ZJ Boarding House on 2619 Main street. On your way, stop on the corner of Bay and Main, and take a look at where modern skateboarding began, the Zephyr Shop. Now it's called Horizons West. If you want to avoid the freeway going from Culver City, just take Venice straight W to Lincoln, make a right on Lincoln, to a left on Pico.

The second place is El Porto in Manhattan Beach which is around 20-25 min drive from Santa Monica. Take Lincoln South down to Jefferson, make a right. That intersection is where the big EA sports building are. Make a slight left onto Vista del Mar. Stay on that road and go by Dockweiler beach. When you come to the gas station, make a right. Rent a surfboard at the shop on Highland Ave(Vista del Mar becomes Highland). The shop is located just north of Rosecrans. If you travel on the freeway, take the 405 South and exit Rosecrans Ave, drive W on Rosecrans, make a right on Highland.

I would go down to El Porto, check out Surfline.com for forecast.

Have fun!!

By the way, both the breaks are beach breaks.

A correction on how to get to El porto. Once you make a right on Jefferson, you need to make a left on Culver before coming to Vista del Mar.
