I have two spots for you that is close, have surf shops with rentals close, it's not so crowded and suited for beginner/mid level surf, depending on swell of course. These are the spots I usually go, cause Malibu is always crowded, Venice =locals, Huntington =too far away.
I will post two mapquests for you, where black circle is parking and red is rental.
The first one is Bay street in Santa Monica. If you go from Culver City, just take the freeway 10 W and exit 4th, go south on 4th to Pico, make a right a Pico. Go straight down to Ocean. Park on Bay Street. You need quarters. To rent a board, go to ZJ Boarding House on 2619 Main street. On your way, stop on the corner of Bay and Main, and take a look at where modern skateboarding began, the Zephyr Shop. Now it's called Horizons West. If you want to avoid the freeway going from Culver City, just take Venice straight W to Lincoln, make a right on Lincoln, to a left on Pico.
The second place is El Porto in Manhattan Beach which is around 20-25 min drive from Santa Monica. Take Lincoln South down to Jefferson, make a right. That intersection is where the big EA sports building are. Make a slight left onto Vista del Mar. Stay on that road and go by Dockweiler beach. When you come to the gas station, make a right. Rent a surfboard at the shop on Highland Ave(Vista del Mar becomes Highland). The shop is located just north of Rosecrans. If you travel on the freeway, take the 405 South and exit Rosecrans Ave, drive W on Rosecrans, make a right on Highland.
I would go down to El Porto, check out Surfline.com for forecast.
Have fun!!
