A pointer for when your looking for your first board. I found on the net.
Shortboards: The most popular type of surfboard, the shortboard (also known as thruster) is a light and easily maneuverable board designed for quick turns. Measuring from 5'8" to 6'10" in length, a shortboard is a good option for beginners if you can find one with single or twin fin that suits you. Do not get one with too many fins as the more fins there are, the higher chance that you will get cut.

i liked the days when there was nothing but peformance shortboards, before longboards got popular again and before the 'funboard' and fish.
people would try surfing, not be able to catch a wave, and break it. Then they just gave up and it was alot less crowded.

It sucks when surfers of less skill can go out and hog all the waves just because they have a bigger board...

Haha, tell me about it. Last weekend a guy on a longboard seemed like he came from the other side of the ocean. I'm not kidding when I say he paddle for over 50 meters to catch a wave...

Maybe you could get Hollywood to take home a jetski...

My board is very pointy at the front. I have on a number of times hurt myself on this shape part of the board. I´ve heard of this nose guard thing, will they keep me safe with eight sharp fins underneath??+

If you get a nose guard, be sure to get razor blade fins on your board, since they slice through the water with a lot less traction.

So, to sum it up, if you´re a newbie, get a board that is:

- Thin (Since there´ll be less weight to push through the surface)
- A pointy nose (It´ll help cut through the water, just think of how ships are built)
- Lots and lots of sharp fins (the term "the more the merrier" really applys here. Be shore to sand them down, to get them razor sharp (that´ll lose traction as mentioned above.))

Oh, or better yet, take the fins out. No traction
