Seven years ago I went to one of those places, didn´t have anything planned and no idea. It was easy to find what you needed. You´ll love it. Have a good one.

Kolla upp om Varas Backpacker finns kvar. Var där för typ 10 år sen så mycke har nog hänt sen dess! Folket var supertrevliga och naturen fantastisk. Har för mej att det tog 45min att köra runt Rarotonga med en moppe.

Hi Mia, I went to Raratonga and Western Samoa in '92 before there were any surf camps in Samoa..Raratonga isn't the ideal surf destination although it's a pretty place..not as beautiful as Seychelles or Maldives but nevertheless ok..It's a small island that you can drive around in about 1½ hrs if I remember correctly..the road goes all the way around and as I can remember there are only 2 openings..(passes) in the reef which surround the island..these are surfable but if you compare it to Bali..raratonga is crap!!..It's still worth a visit to say you've been there and there are a couple of other places that can be surfable on the right tide...Samoa, on the other hand is worth going to..here you need to be prepared to handle HEAVY waves with RAW open ocean power from deep water and breaking often on VERY shallow reef..like real HAWAIIN style surf...not kidding..I remember pulling up at one spot by myself and getting out of the car..there was a left hander breaking about 1km out at about 8-10..it was tubing..The waves hit the reef so HARD that the beach SHOOK like an earthquake..there was a 25 knot current running out through the pass opening and I can tell you it was the scariest surf I have EVER surfed in alone..I was dodging coral heads on the bottom turns in barrells you could drive a car in ..all alone..i caught 10 waves then paddled in before i got slammed and dragged out to hawaii...I know that there are other waves in western and American Samoa (just a short boat ride away) that are really good..hope that helps..peace RATB)

Om du kan få tag på November numret av Transworld surf, så finnd det ett rese reportage om Rarotonga.

Om man kollar på bilderna så ser det riktigt nice ut! Men det verkar bara vara reef-pass med gott om juice! Så det vill nog till att man är rätt så van tunga vågor som tubar över shallow reef!

Hi, Rarotonga doesn't sound too good surfwise However I've seen some good footage and reports from the island so I still think you can get good days there. RAT stop scaring me regarding WS I'm sure I will find some good surf on Western Samoa even if a lot of the surf is heavy there is always bigger and smaller days and more and less heavy breaks.
More tips are welcome! I will check out the mag 4 sure.
