Well, if I were you, I'd stay away from Waikiki because the waves usually always suck on that side this time of year. However now and then Ala Moana can be good.
If you check out the Turtle Bay Hilton you won't be sad. It's kind of pricey but the dollar is low as hell so it won't be so bad. It's THE best location if your plan is to surf or watch the North Shore. If you stay in Waikiki, it's a really long drive to get to Haleiwa and you'll end up spending the same amount of money on taxis as you would if you stayed at the Turtle Bay Hilton. Plus all the best "Surf" parties are on the North Shore or at the Hilton anyway. I recommend you check it out.
Of course, if you're going there to shop and have that "big city" feeling, go to Waikiki. "An wachow fo duh cockroaches an duh rats bra!"
If you're going to surf on the North Shore, Stay the hell out of the way.. some of the locals there can be complete dickheads. If you're unsure as to where to paddle out, then don't paddle out. Ask someone where the channel is. The worst thing that can happen is when you paddle out and you're not in the channel, and a set rolls in and you're caught inside or in someones way. You'll never experience anything with so much power and speed so be careful. And ALWAYS look where you are. The currents are strong sometimes and you could end up a mile out in the Pacific. I'm not suggesting you don't know how to surf or that you have no experience, just think you should know the worst case senarios if you weren't already aware of them.
have fun and stop by the 7-11 in Haleiwa and get yourself some nachos and a thirsty two ouncer of Coke for me.
