sorry but I have to write in english:

alrighty

i am not sure what you mean by training on flat water but if you want to get in shape go swimming.
I've said it all along, it's better to have played water polo than to have grown up skating or snowboarding if you are starting out surfing. That said, it's better if you've done a lot of all three.

paddle your board heaps, imitate the form of the better surfers you've seen while the water is flat, good form is more important than being in shape.

Sao Paolo has waves, warm water and beachbreaks, you might not get epic swell but you might and even if you don't you can paddle around and still have fun on smaller waves.

Boards are cheap in Brazil.
As for your picture, you seem to be doing everything right, slow to your feet but that could just be your wave reading abilities and not the actual strength of your pop-up.

I have to say, I admire the humble approach of your post. You came with your information and not with a sense of entitlement like many others do.

It also seems like you have done your own research before posting which no other NOOBS seem to do. Which is why I felt like helping.

you could be well on your way to becoming a BOS if you keep it up.

peace

Your help is really appreciated. Beginner posts tend to suck/be boring/ask the same questions over and over...

By flat water I mean in water training when there's no waves. I guess the wording comes from my background as a windsurfer. I was primarily thinking about paddling technique, and maybe training duckdive motions etc. But pure swimming might be just as good? Whatever gets me a "proper" ride faster. Can't wait to get some real riding done (as opposed to mostly getting washed).

I like water, but I've never spent much time with "proper" swimming. Never skated, snowboarding is limited to a few days when I was a kid (got sick and hated snowboarding after that, stuck with skiing instead). But I'm a reasonably accomplished windsurfer (see pic, probably from your home break if I'm not mistaken), which hopefully helps a bit. If nothing I have else a healthy bit of feeling for waves, rips etc. thanks to that.

When you say imitate the form of.., does that equal the paddling technique?

Regarding the popup, it's probably a combination (not exactly the smoothest popup ever, gotta work on the motion to make it more fluid). I took of on the shoulder rather than on steepest part of the wave, but I'm sure that trying the really steep takeoff would just get me washed. Especially since the sets was more than head high. The wave is actually not that different from the outer reef at stenudden on a larger day.

Thanks for the pointers on Brazil, might just bring a suit and get a board there then.

yeah I meant imitate the paddling form of the better surfers, form and positioning is more important than being in shape.

that said, it's good to be in shape too.

Swimming is best: because: you train the supporting muscles and therefore don't wear out your paddling muscles as much.

BUT since you are just starting, it is good to go out and paddle heaps on a board, especially on flat days with no wind and put all your FOCUS into correct paddling form.

Which is:
- check that you are on the right spot on the board, the nose shouldn't be up in the air, but you should be as far forward on the board, to keep from pearling (nose going under,) lift your chest off the board, BUT NOT TOO MUCH, you don't want to wear out your lower back either.

Don't let your shoulders come out of their sockets too much, bend your arms, don't lift too high and focus on mainly the catch part of the paddle at first.

duckdives you can practice with a smaller board but is actually harder on flat water

Sweet, thanks. I'll mix swimming and paddling.

Getting a new, thin, summer suit too. Paddling in a thick winter windsurfing suit puts some extra strain on the back (it's made for a more hunched position) and arms.
