Hej.

Så, hit me!

the lost Shark is so big compared to your size and weight that fins won't really make a significant difference.

the F-1 will see more effect
what fins do you use in it now and what is it that you don't like about it or want to change?

At your weight a standard set of m3's would be a starting point for the f-1, m-5's or bigger for the Shark, if you want more specific help, i need to know what set you have now, and where they feel like they are restricting you

Thanx for you're answer!

The shark has been my companion trough out the years and it caches almost everything, but as you mentioned its a bit big for me... The Mayhem GMB came with both boards and on the Shark I tend to feel it can lose some speed, I know it might be from the boardsize but a little more kick would be neat to have.

Regarding my F-1 I got about a year ago but haven't really tried out fully, just some occasional good days in Sweden and I think it handles well. Of course its a lot less forgiving than the Shark but I sometimes feel as it turns a bit to swiftly or instantly. I'm bringing it to Sri Lanka in January and good surf shops don't grow on trees there that's why i want to buy a set before leaving. I looked at the once you recommended and they seem to be close to what I might need.

An other question: As you can tell I have a serious crush on my Shark, I've ridden it in Sri Lanka before but I have second thoughts about bringing it this time what do think?

/Daniel

how long will you be there_? could be good just to have a back up board in case anything happpens, but in warm tropical water, it's nice to get on lower volume boards.

Hmm jo jag gillar allt utom att dom ser ut att skicka på rätt mycket drive och brädan är redan riktigt snabb (för mig i alla fall)... Vad kör du för bräda till H2?

I'll only be there for 4 weeks so maybe the F-1 is enough... In case of emergency they have banged up really bad boards for hire on the beach.

Regarding the fins have you had experience with the H3's that Lars recommended? I think it will only ad more speed to a already fast board?

Speed is a very lurig term, and so is a 'fast board'

By that, I mean a board can be quick and responsive, but not necessarily fast and drivy and vice versa and even more. I mean, it really is a can of worms.

I'd compare it to gears on a car. Sometimes you need something quick, like first gear, although it won't reach top speed like fifth gear, but that could be on waves that don't offer a top speed high way.
Sometimes you need something solid and fast, with drive, it requires more input, but will take you further and faster, like a car on a highway in fifth gear.

Problem is, ever tried to start a car in fifth gear? Or ever drove on a highway in first gear?

Now I think you might be seeing what I mean a little. The trick is to find out a little what you want out of the board.

fortunately, fins aren't just first, second, third and fifth drive, most have a little of each unless you go pretty extreme

So where do you start? Well first of all size, and that is two fold. size of rider, size of board.

You are technically a small.
So there you have a choice of FCS , basically a set of the size 3, like M3 templates are your starting point.
Your board however is a medium sized board and large in comparison to you. So now you have a choice. Bigger boards per surfer ratio have more float, thus need more fin. But you might not need more fin if you are surfing waves that are down the line (could be big or small, this has more to do with pitch of the wave and how fast they peel)
If the waves are somewhat steep and fast down the line, you can get away with smaller fins because you'll be using more of your rail to hold you on the face. So you could stick with the M3's no problem.

If the waves are a little slopier and maybe slower peeling, you might want a medium sized template. There are several that are sort of medium-small like the Simon Anderson fins at medium or the Al Merrick Mediums.

My guess would be the Simon Anderson fins would be good for you for the 6'3 in Sri Lanka, but I would not use them at all on the big ass Shark. In fact, those GMB's you have are size large, so you might want to keep those for the shark, but if you think it doesn't feel loose enough, just swap the rear fin to an m3 template fin.

to simplify this post.

Fin choice is, in order of priority:
1 Size (70 percent rider size, maybe 30 percent board size)
2 Shape (optimized for blend of board choice and wave choice) the generic templates, are m3, m5 and m7, those are pretty much small, medium and large, and are pretty much right down the middle when it comes to drive-response, hold-release, carve -snap
other fins, push more towards one and less towards other characteristics, making them more suitable to specific boards, waves or rider style.
3 Material (not nearly as important as the above, but makes a difference, stiffer for smaller waves or for bigger surfers, and well, vice versa for bigger waves or smaller surfer)

Thanx a bundle for taking the time for such a competent answer!!!
The guidelines are great and now i understand its a little more to it.
I'll brows trough the different ones and get one or two sets but the M3's sure seems like a good start.

Thanks again

jag vet inte så mycket om dem brädorna. Men om Nord's sverige fish är något lik Lost's Roundnose fish, så tycker jag att MR twin plus trailer eller H2 mediums är bra
